Burn After Reading

with Brad Pitt, George Clooney, John Malkovich, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton is the latest dark comedy by the Coen Brothers. You’ve never seen, and probably won’t after this one, Brad Pitt and George Clooney as A1 dimwits--Pitt who works in a gym who gets his hands (along with co-worker Frances McDormand) on some CIA documents that they try to sell; Clooney is a cad and a womanizer who works for the Treasury (it’s a mystery to what he does). If you liked Fargo, this will be up your alley. Don’t go for any intellectual stimulation, but there are lots of laughs.

Who Should See It? – Teens and up - maybe not for Gramma.

Dark Knight

with Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Maggie Gyllenhaal is that latest in the Batman franchise. Good cop Jim Gordon and DA Harvey Dent join forces with Batman to rid Gotham of crime for good. Every Batman has a Joker persona, this one is downright nasty, evil, cruel, master criminal mind—you name it, Heath Ledger’s Joker gives you the creeps. I know that it’s critically acclaimed by most, but I came away with a “Wish I hadn’t seen this one.” The acting is first-rate, director top notch, etc.,…but, there wasn’t a character you loved; plenty you hated—it’s a huge pass for me

Who Should See It?—Not Gramma, that's for sure; not kids, not me

Bottle Shock

with Bill Pullman, Freddy Rodriquez, Christ Pine, and Rachael Taylor is based on a true story that revealed to the wine world the depth and quality of the Californian wines. Steven Spurrier is a small wine shop owner in Paris who dreams up a wine competition between France and the U.S. to bring attention to his shop. Heading to California and visiting a variety of small wineries in the Napa, Sonoma area of Northern California, our wine owner selects 24 bottles to compete with France’s best.

One winery is owned by Jim Barrett (Pullman), a real estate lawyer who’s escaped the law to follow his dream and create the perfect chardonnay. Fresh from a divorce, the other key player is Bo (Pine), the mixed up slacker son—when they disagree, they settle it in the boxing ring out in the yard. Bo is a good guy, tries to get his act together, but he keeps slipping and slacking. Bo, though, discovers that the wines aren’t the garbage that his Dad thinks they are. All of the vintners pool their funds and send Bo to represent them at the big competition.

In the end, the California wines are the stars. This is a movie, that when it opens, you fall in. I loved it.

Who Should See It?—Anyone who likes wine and a great story. Not a kid flick.

Mama Mia

with Meryl Streep, Pierce, Brosnan, Amanda, Seyfried, Collin First and Stellan Skarsgard, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski. Streep is Donna, a fiercely independent Mom living on a Greek island with her daughter who’s about to get married. Walters and Baranski are her musical gal pals from the past. Daughter Sophie has found a diary that reveals her Mother’s loves the summer before her birth, so invites each of the three men, hoping that she will meet her father. Meanwhile, Donna’s gal pals from her past come to the wedding and music and dancing abounds. Pierce Brosnan uses his voice for his songs---should have dubbed… otherwise, it’s fun. It’s a chick flick, I had a good time.

WALL-E

is the latest from Pixar and Walt Disney Studios and is sure too delight just about anyone. Wall-E stands for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class and discovers a new purpose in his “life” when he meets up with another robot, Eve. Eve works for the humans and when she realizes that Wall-E has the key to the planet’s future. A little slow in the beginning, but it picks up and is a delight—definitely add to your DVD collection when available.

Igor

has a stellar voice cast of John Cusack, John Cleese, Jennifer Coolidge, Arsenio Hall, Sean Hayes, Eddie Izzard, Jay Leno, James Lipton, Molly Shannon, and Christian Slater. Igor is a hunched back assistant to a cruel, mad scientist who dreams of being recognized for his skills and smarts… but Igors aren’t supposed to be smart, much less have real skills that could be of worthwhile to the world. Igors even go to Igor school to learn how to drag their feet and slur their words. When Igor’s scientist dies via a laboratory accident, Igor gets his chance to take the helm of creation.

Who Should See It?—Not Gramma, not young pre-schoolers and the over 8 crowd will mostly likely take a pass. Animated from MGM, it’s definitely not the quality of a Pixar flick and there are times I struggled with it.

DVDs for You and the Family

Juno
with Ellen Page, Allison Janey, Jennifer Garner, Michael Cera, and JK Simmons create an interesting cast. A surprise hit from last year, it’s all about a teen who finds herself pregnant—her boyfriend is a runner on the track team in high school and clueless. Her parents are a kick as they support her through the months ahead (just her telling them she’s preggers is worth seeing)—she knows that she will have the baby and put it up for adoption—but to whom? Juno answers the ad a couple puts in the local paper. This is a comedy, coming of age flick, well worth seeing.
