Winbledon
with Kirsten Dunst (Lizzie), Paul Bettany
(Peter), and Sam Neill (Dad to Lizzie) is a kick and a treat. It’s a love
story; it’s a story of discovery and comeback; and it’s just a great way to
spend a couple of hours. Peter has won a wild-card slot at Wimbledon and has
decided that no matter what, this is his last professional tournament—he’s
accepted a position as the pro at a golf club (to the delight of the
ladies). He connects with Lizzie; falls in love and tadah…..his game
improves to carry him to the finals. If you liked Four Weddings and a
Funeral, Love Actually or Notting Hill, this movie is for you.

Collateral
with Tom Cruise
(Vincent), Jamie Foxx (Max) and Jada Pinkett Smith (Annie) starts off with
an exchange of briefcases in an airport. You are clueless as to what is in
the briefcase, but no matter, you next view Max as the cab driver with his
fare, Annie the prosecutor. Max drops her off and picks up his next ride,
Vincent who hires him for the night. Seems harmless, let all hell is ready
to break lose. Vincent first tells Max that he is in real estate—he just
needs to drop off a few papers…that is until a body falls on top of the
cab—Vincent is a hit man. Collateral is intense, Cruise could get an Oscar
nomination.

Sky Captain & the World of
Tomorrow
with Gwyneth Paltrow,
Jude Law, Giovanni Ribisi and Angelina Jolie is the Saturday flick of
childhood a little bit Flash Gordon, Batman and Robin, Raiders of the Lost
Ark, Godzilla and the Wizard of OZ. Polly Perkins (Paltrow) is the gal
reporter who always gets her story (and hopefully her man) and always wears
these damn high-heels; Law is Captain Joe—fearless pilot extraordinaire with
his sidekick, the brilliant tech dude Dex (Ribisi); and Franky Cook (Jolie)
as the commander of the pre-space station.
With that said, the story switches back and forth from black and white,
giant mechanical men are invading cities and stealing resources and Captain
Joe and Dex have to save the world as the discover that several scientists
have flown the coop. Can pretty Polly, Joe and Dex save earth before it’s
too late from the evil mastermind, Dr. Totenkpopf?

LION KING 2 - SIMBA'S PRIDE
The old gang is back with the intro of
Simba’s daughter Kiara--a young lioness with a mind and heart of her own.
Scar’s decedents are plotting to take over the pride--Kovu is new on the
scene and is destined to become the new leader . . . until he meets Kiara.
The wise ones realize that the only way the prides will survive is to
unite them through the kids, Kiara and Kovu. The usual Disney type of
music, but not the punch of Elton John’s Circle of Life song. Still, it’s
a good flick and deserves a place on your family video shelf—the kids will
watch it many times.
This is a disc set--the second disc has a variety of games, a special
animated short, there’s a bio on the lions that were the role-models for
Simba and the pride, virtual theme park rides and more--plenty of items
for all the kids.
Who Should See It?--Same audience
of the original Lion King, kids and up, including Gramma.--

THE ALAMO is out in DVD not
long after its release in the spring of 2004. Produced by Ron Howard and
Mark Johnson, an unlikely cast is brought together to play out the
birthing of Texas as part of the US vs. Mexico. Billy Bob Thornton plays a
kind, sensitive, thoughtful and musical David Crockett (not Davy!--and he
fiddles on the roof!) with Dennis Quaid as hard-nose General Sam Houston
(stiff and almost bug-eye in this role), Jason Patric as “drinking until
the end James Bowie’ and Patrick Wilson at Lt. Col. William Travis who is
the Alamo’s commanding officer. Set in 1836, 200 men held off thousands of
Mexican soldiers under the command of General Antonio Lopez de Santa
Anna--portrayed as a Napoleonic look alike--for 13 days. Crockett is the
last to die. The Alamo has a rich history--the first hour drags and movie
picks up the second hour as the battle scenes begin. The DVD has extras
for history buffs plus deleted scenes.
Who Should See It?--preteens
and up. Gramma probably won’t love this. --2
